Accuracy is the key. A system is only as good as the data going into it.

Calibration

Instruments, Multi Function Displays and Autopilots all require varying levels of calibration.

In the past calibration has been an often over looked process in commissioning of new vessels and hence there are many boats that have never been correctly setup since new.

It is worth spending some time and effort to perform calibrations as the rewards include fuel savings, faster passage making, better race results and more efficient power usage.

Instruments
In a racing environment a well calibrated and correctly specified instrument system can provide usable information to assist in tactical decision making. Yacht racing instrument manufacturers such as Brookes & Gatehouse, Nexus and Ockam have intricate calibration processes to obtain accurate results and thorough calibration is required to produce usable data.

When cruising accuracy may not be as critical, however the instruments can contribute to autopilot performance if used in wind or heading modes thus power consumption and performance are influenced by having a well calibrated instrument system.

Multi Function Displays (MFD’s)
Usually offer three key features GPS chart-plotting, Radar and Fishfinder/Sounder all found in the one display or shared across multiple screens in a network; often there are other features such as video inputs and interfaces to other devices like an NMEA2000 network for example. The complexity of these marine networks continues to expand and it is not surprising that many calibration/setup parameters are not configured correctly.

Autopilots
A well configured autopilot can contribute to safe operation at speed for power boats, will assist in fast passage making in yachts whilst offering fuel & electrical savings for both power and sail.

Often a yacht will require different autopilot parameters configured for sailing from what works when motoring and we are able to provide instruction on such systems.

Digital Marine offers calibration for all instruments, MFD’s and autopilots. For a basic depth, speed, wind and heading system we offer a flat rate calibration service of $269.

When more complexity is involved we are happy to provide an estimate for the work involved on your particular vessel.
