Step by Step Marine Electronics Tuition
We are interested in making boating easier and recognise there are many owners who would like to get the most from their electronics packages that may be confused by the technology they have invested in.
Digital Marine wants you to enjoy the technology at hand without the need to read confusing manuals or bring a friend/family member along who “understands this stuff”.
Lesson 1 Fundamentals
To start with we believe an understanding of coastal navigation using paper charts is essential to any would-be navigator. From there this knowledge can then be adapted onto modern electronic systems for navigation purposes. A thorough explanation of charts and navigation aids is well worth you having.
Lesson 2 Systems
We believe it is important to empower the owner with knowledge of his vessels systems to develop confidence and understanding in his boat. This involves a detailed tour of the boat so that an owner has a good understanding of the layout of his systems. If required a map with locations of these items can be derived, for future troubleshooting maintenance and understanding.
Lesson 3 Operating Individual Components
Current multi function displays offer Radar, Sounder and Chart-plotting functions in the one unit, which adds complexity. Couple that with radar overlay an autopilot interface and recommended routing it is no wonder people feel overwhelmed. We can offer simple tuition and course notes about these individual items and focus on each item separately rather than fully integrating them at this stage.
Lesson 4 Consolidation
After operating individual components and gaining an understanding of each we bring the whole course together by running through all that we have touched on throughout the course to round out your knowledge and finish with some of the more advanced features such as integrating the Autopilot with a waypoint on the plotter, radar overlay on the chart, some discussion about Automatic Identification System (AIS), Digital Select Calling (DSC), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBS) and the latest developments in the ever changing marine electronics world.
*Lessons are usually two hours duration and a four lesson course costs $500 usually run over four weeks, or $140 per lesson.
